The New Zealand Ireland Association will host a screening of rare photographic and film footage uniquely curated for the NZIA to mark the anniversary of the WWI landing at Gallipoli.

 

In a world-first cinematic experience, the event will also include a satellite broadcast of the Centenary ANZAC Dawn Service from Gallipoli from that same morning. The screening will take place at the Irish Film Institute (IFI) on ANZAC Day, Saturday, 25 April 2015 from 11.15am to 14.00pm.

Tickets, which must be purchased in advance, cost a nominal €15 per adult and €5 per child (plus booking fee) to cover expenses. Ticket price includes tea, coffee and pastries which will be served in advance of the screening.

 

The audience will be transported back in time to 1915, firstly through a carousel of seldom seen stills taken from a variety of collections and sources worldwide, with live piano accompaniment by Morgan Cooke. This will be followed by a short programme of moving image content from the IFI Irish Film Archive, including the Lumière Brothers 1897 footage of Dublin and other rare examples.

 

With the scene set, viewers will then visually experience the realities of the Gallipoli Landing and the poignant thread it weaves through the fabric of New Zealand and Australian culture through a screening of the rare contemporaneous film “Heroes of Gallipoli”, featuring New Zealand and Australian members of the armed forces during the campaign, courtesy of the Imperial War Museum London. In a world-first cinematic experience, the IFI will host a satellite broadcast of the Centenary ANZAC Dawn Service from Gallipoli from that same morning, courtesy of ABC, Australia.

 

The New Zealand Ireland Association film experience takes its place in a worldwide program of events to mark 100 years since the fateful Gallipoli campaign. In addition, given the inclusion of visual material featuring Irish life during the period, the screening proudly joins a host of activities being held in the lead-up to the centenary of the 1916 Easter Rising.

As a Corporate Member of the IFI, the NZIA has arranged this private event, which it is pleased to open to non-NZIA members as a result of the generous support given by the New Zealand Embassy to Ireland and the Irish Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht.
